Ecuador

MAINLAND ECUADOR
The coast of Ecuador bulges into the Pacific Ocean on both sides of the equator; with southern coast facing SW, central coast facing W, and northern coast facing NW. Its 700 miles of coastline is typified by a long series of beaches, sand points and rock reefs open to the prevailing swell. Given the curvature of the coastline southern Ecuador has mainly right points, and northern Ecuador mainly left points. As with most countries south of 20 degrees longitude Ecuador can receive south swells year round, where north swells are typically only experienced from December through April. Given the variety of types of breaks available in conjunction with the large swell window Ecuador produces very consistent surf and is an excellent location for all levels of surfers.

Mainland Ecuador divides into three surfing areas: The south coast is 65 miles of southwest-facing beaches and points, In the Playas region of this area there are 7 point breaks that range from beginner-friendly to Black Diamond, and many many miles of open beach.

The "Central Coast" of mainland Ecuador is the 100+ miles of coastline from Salinas in the south to San Mateo in the north. In the middle of this is Montanita - the Surf City of Ecuador and home to one of the best right hand rock reefs in Central America. There are a lot of spots within range of Montanita, and some of them are secret. From this central area it is convenient to head north or south depending on the swell.

Between Montanita and the town of Manta there is a cluster of spots that includes Puerto Cayo, a world-class beach break with board breaking power and little to no crowd. The northern border of the Central Coast is the long, left point at San Mateo - the Chicama of Ecuador One of the best waves in Ecuador. From San Mateo heading north there is not much until the Mompiche area, 6 hours north. This wave is fickle, but another of Ecuador's best left points.

From Playas to Montanita to San Mateo is an area of the world you probably have never heard of, and when you go there and get a taste of right and left points, reefbreaks and beachbreaks, you will be glad to know that in this world, there are still areas of great surf that have been overlooked.
